Minit is Torben Tilly and Jasmine Guffond, and this CD is their first full length album, a collection of seven pieces recorded between August 1997 and December 1998. Each piece is titled by its place in the Minit chronology and constructed through the layering, sequencing and plotting of samples. Both human and electronic errors are allowed to emerge out of this process of electronic repetition and bifurcation. For Minit repetition is a methodology of unlimited possibilities. As they move through an architecture of inextricable moments, from a pin-prick of static, to a lumbering and distended loop, Minit reconstitutes time.
How, in a Tarkovsky film, without obtrusive special effects, does a landscape in which a sudden downpour pelts the surface of a lake where moments ago we watched reeds slowly float, convey the unfolding of a science fiction? Minit Music, with its comparable economy of means, presents a parallel question. If Minit enact an autism, through their musical predisposition towards points of fixed focus and minute stumbling blocks, then from this very same 'dumb' absorption, comes a volley of miraculous flowerings.
